  • On January 29, 2010, Kathryn Wissel and Domestic Violence Commissioner Rosemary Cosgrove-Aguilar will present a CLE titled "An Overview of Family Law Issues."

    The CLE is approved for 5.5 general credits and is offered free to members of the 2nd Judicial Volunteer Attorney Pool who have provided pro bono services in 2009 or agree to provide pro bono services in 2010. The cost for non-members is $240.

Founded in 1977, we are a small law firm that focuses on Family Law matters. We specialize in complex issues of divorce, child custody, child support, property division, collaborative divorces, appellate practice, guardianship, adoption, paternity, juvenile law, special education and civil rights. Our firm is dedicated to meeting the needs of our clients and representing their interests zealously. We seek to move cases as quickly as possible through the court system, while ensuring that our client's needs and wishes are addressed.

We are also focused on children. We know that parents want the best for their children and we seek, through our representation to make any transition as painless as possible for our clients and their children.
Maria R. Garcia Geer has been a partner in the firm for 30 years. Maria was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Maria attended the University of New Mexico, graduating magna cum laude in 1971 with a B.A.. Maria went on to earn a Masters in 1975 and a J.D. in 1978 from the University of New Mexico. She has been practicing law for over 30 years and is a member of the New Mexico State Bar, U.S. District Court for the Tenth Circuit, and the New Mexico Federal District Court.

Maria is a member of the Board of Directors for New Mexico Legal Aid; a member of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association; a member Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library Advisory Board; member of the Arts Alliance Board; and member of the Board of Directors for Escuela Del Sol Montessori. Maria practices general civil law, with a focus on Family Law/Domestic Relations, Personal Injury, Real Estate, Wills, and Adoption Law.
Kathryn M. Wissel has been a partner in the firm for 23 years. Kathryn was born in Nampa, Idaho. She attended Marylhurst College, receiving her B.A. in 1969. Kathryn moved to Albuquerque and began teaching English in the Albuquerque Public Schools. After seven years of teaching, Kathryn obtained a J.D. from the University of New Mexico, graduating magna cum laude in 1979.

Kathryn is a member of the New Mexico State Bar, U.S. District Court for the Tenth Circuit, New Mexico Federal District Court, and has been practicing law for over 35 years. She started practice in a general civil law firm and later worked for Protection and Advocacy representing persons with disabilities before joining Geer Wissel & Levy, P.A. in 1986. Kathryn is currently the president of the board of Law Access New Mexico, a legal helpline which provides services for low income persons throughout the state. She is also a trained mediator.

Kathryn practices general civil law with a focus on Family Law/Domestic Relations; Children; Adoption Law; Special Education; Wills; and is a member of the New Mexico Collaborative Practice Group, which brings together professionals with legal, financial and mental health expertise to address the difficult choices in a divorce.
Robert D. Levy is a founding member of the firm. Robert was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Wesleyan University, receiving his B.A. in 1967. Robert received his J.D. in 1972 from Boston University. In 1973 he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and fell in love with the people and beauty of New Mexico.

Robert is a member of the New Mexico State Bar, U.S. District Court for the Tenth Circuit, New Mexico Federal District Court, and has been practicing law for over 35 years. Robert practices general civil, with a focus on Family Law/Domestic Relations, Business, Children, Contracts, Personal Injury, and Civil Rights.
Jane C. Levy joined the firm in 2004 and became a partner in 2009. Jane was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She received a B.A. from Beloit, College in Beloit, Wisconsin in 2000. Jane matriculated to Lewis & Clark School of Law in Portland, Oregon, and graduated with a J.D. in 2004. She recently completed her course work for a Masters degree in Psychological and Cultural Studies from the Lewis & Clark College's Graduate School of Education and Counseling and expects to be awarded her Masters in December, 2009. Her Masters work has focused on helping children through conflict and change, specifically divorce and custody disputes.

Jane is a member of the New Mexico State Bar, U.S. District Court for the Tenth Circuit, and the New Mexico Federal District Court. Jane practices general civil law with an emphasis on Family Law/Domestic Relations, Children, Guardianship cases, Business, Contracts, Personal Injury, and Civil Rights. Jane lives with her husband and son in Albuquerque.
Elizabeth Drotning Hartwell was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and received a B.A. cum laude in English, religion, and women's studies from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She received her J.D. from the University of St. Thomas School of Law (Minneapolis, Minnesota), which she attended on a President's Scholarship. While in law school, Elizabeth was a Senior Editor of the law journal and a certified student attorney in the Family Law Practice Group of the University of St. Thomas Interprofessional Center for Counseling & Legal Services.

Elizabeth is licensed to practice family law in New Mexico and joined Geer Wissel & Levy P.A. as an associate attorney in 2007. She is a member of the Family Law Section of the New Mexico State Bar Association and the Albuquerque Bar Association. A trained Collaborative Attorney, she is also active in several Collaborative Divorce associations including the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, the New Mexico Collaborative Practice Group, the Albuquerque Collaborative Practice Group and the Ristra Collaborative Professionals.

A freelance cellist and singer, Elizabeth also serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program. She lives with her husband and daughter in Albuquerque.

Directions from I-25:
Take the Martin Luther King/Central Avenue exit and head west on Central Avenue. Move to the right lane. Once you pass under the railroad tracks, Central Avenuce forks. Follow the right fork which will turn into Copper Avenue. Immediately after taking the right fork, turn right onto 1st Street. Parking is available in a lot on the left. Our building is directly west across 2nd Street. Use the building's southwest entrance and ride an elevator to the 3rd floor.

Directions from Eastbound I-40:
Take the 6th Street exit and turn right on 6th Street. Follow 6th Street south to Tijeras Avenue. Turn left on Tijeras. Move to the right lane. Turn right on 1st Street. Parking is available in a lot on the right side of the street. Our building is directly across 2nd Street. Use the building's southwest entrance and ride an elevator to the 3rd floor.

Directions from Westbound I-40:
Take the exit for 2nd - 4th Streets and turn left onto 2nd Street at the light (2nd Street southbound becomes 3rd Street south of I-40). Turn left on Tijeras. Move to the right lane. Turn right on 1st Street. Parking is available in a lot on the right side of the street. Our building is directly across 2nd Street. Use the building's southwest entrance and ride an elevator to the 3rd floor.
